5/28/03 Dick Powell's Father
Harold R. "Dick" Powell, 73, of West Marion Street, Mt. Gilead, Ohio died Sunday, May 25, 2003 at his home.

He was a lifelong Morrow County resident, where he was born on January 11, 1930, the son of the late Harold W. Powell and Erma B. Gale Powell who survives in Mt. Gilead. He graduated from Mt. Gilead High School in 1948 and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948-1951. He worked for North Electric Company in Galion for 33 years where he was manager of electronic engineering. He also owned and operated Powell's TV until retiring. He was a member of the Mt. Gilead V.F.W. Post #8054.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Charlotte M. Underwood Powell, whom he married November 18, 1951; three sons Mark (Vikki) Powell of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, Richard (Seby) Powell of Marion, Ohio, and Ed (Valerie ) Powell of Mt. Gilead, Ohio; four daughters Terri (Dean) Redmond of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, Lisa (John) Crothers of Cardington, Ohio, Kay Bowers (Bob Sparks) of Mohnton, Penn., and Beth (Tim) McCane of Peebles, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; a step-great granddaughter; and a sister Esther (Bill) Mc Gee of Columbus, Ohio.

Two grandchildren Dawn R. Brammer and Jeremy R. Powell, a step-great granddaughter Sky Angel Neu and three sisters Sheila Pine, Patricia Powell and Sara Miller also preceded him in death.

Friends may call at the Snyder Funeral Home in Mt. Gilead on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Pastor Eric Schroeter will hold funeral services there Wednesday at 2 p.m. Burial with military honors by the Mt. 1/21/03 Bev Wood Schroeder's father
William A. "Bill" Wood, age 76, of US Rt. 42, Mt. Gilead died Saturday evening February 1, 2003 in Riverside Methodist Hospital. He was born in Mt. Gilead on December 16, 1926 to the late Harry M. and Sara A. (Pumphrey) Wood.

Bill was a 1944 graduate of Mt. Gilead High School and a 1950 graduate of Ohio State University where he obtained a degree in Engineering and was a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honorary. He served our country in the United States Navy during World War II. He worked at Westinghouse in Mansfield for 40 years as plant Engineer. Bill was a member of the First Baptist Church where he had been the Treasurer for the past 13 years. In addition he also served as a church deacon, Sunday school superintendent and teacher. He was also a member of the Mt. Gilead Kiwanas, Alpha Twig of the Morrow County Hospital, Jenkins-Vaughn American Legion Post #97, Westinghouse Retirees and had been Chairman of the North Central Ohio IEEE. Bill was a past Commander and instructor for the Marion Power Squadron as well as a member of the American Red Cross Board of Directors, serving as Chairman of the Disaster Committee. He had served as a Republican Central Committeeman for several years.

On February 18, 1951, in West Alexandria, Bill married Marjorie E. Ulrich and she survives in him in Mt. Gilead. Other survivors include 1 son and his wife Wm. Bradley ìBradî and Rita Wood, of Mt. Gilead; 2 daughters, Beverly and Tom Schroeder of Miami, Florida and Sara Wood of Edison; 9 grandchildren and their spouses, Chris and Alesha Wood, Philip Wood, Kelli Wood, Abi and Scott McCracken, Amy, Andrew, Kyle, Thomas III and Anna Schroeder; 2 sisters Martha B. Daniel and Sarah E. Parsons both of Corpus Christi, TX and 1 brother Warren J. Wood of Millersburg.

Friends may call Tuesday 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Gilead. 1/23/03 Mary Rinehart Ward
Mary Rinehart Ward, 98, formerly of Buckeye Lane, Mt. Gilead, Ohio, died Wednesday, January 22, 2003 in the Florida Hospital in Sebring, FL.

She resided in Morrow County for most of her life, where she was born on Feb. 9, 1904, the daughter of the late O. F. and Myra Herron Rinehart. She graduated from Mt. Gilead High School in 1921, Edison Normal School, and Ashland College.

Mary's teaching experiences in Morrow County spanned nearly 46 years, starting with a one-room school in Chesterville in 1922. She also taught at Washington School in Chester Twp., West Miller School near Williamsport, and Johnsville School, until completing her teaching career as a first grade teacher at the Mt. Gilead Cherry Street School, retiring in 1968.

Mary was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she was Chairman of the Worship Committee for over 30 years, and UMW. Other memberships include Delta Kappa Gamma, Senior Progress Club, Morrow County Retired Teachers Association, the Silver Twig at Morrow County Hospital, Mothers Forum, the Morrow County Red Cross Board, the Burgoyne Chapter #178 of the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Mt. Gilead Free Public Library Board of Trustees.

She is survived by three daughters Anna Mary Cronenwett of Sebring, FL, Virginia Young of Odessa, TX, and Myra Jo Beach of Aberdeen, MD; a daughter-in-law Marilyn Ward of Plant City, FL; 11 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and several great great grandchildren.

Her husband Clifford D. Ward, whom she married on May 28, 1924, preceded her in death on Sept. 23, 1973. A son William Ward, a brother Joseph Rinehart and sisters Lenore Rinehart and Gayle Patzer also preceded her in death.

1/21/03 Karen Karody's Father,
Arthur J. Korody, 84, of Co. Rd. 115, Mt. Gilead, Ohio died Sunday, January 12, 2003, at his home.

He was born in Racine, Wisconsin on August 16, 1918, the son of the late Frank and Barbara Ternansky Korody. He graduated from Agosta High School (New Bloomington, OH) in 1936, moving here from Marion County in 1938. Arthur farmed and worked as an electrician for Erie Lackawanna Railroad and Conrail until retiring in 1982. He attended Gilead Friends Church and was a former member of the Knights of Pythias, Canaan Grange, the Morrow County Bee Keepers Association, and the Erie and Conrail Railroad Veterans. He enjoyed working in his orchard, gardening, rock collecting, and was known as Mr. Fix-It, as he could fix or repair nearly anything. His grandchildren loved the way he always passed out honey candy.

He is survived by his wife Mary E. Carmean Peterson Korody, whom he married Feb. 18, 1950; two sons Mark (Janet) Peterson of Lexington, OH and Arthur L. Korody of Galion, OH; a daughter Karen (Mark) McElhaney of Selma, AL; a former daughter-in-law Beverly Korody of Ontario, OH; six grandchildren Lisa, Tammy, Vicki, Brian, Kaulen and Marc; six great grandchildren Alisha, Brock, Carson, Hope, Macy and Raney; and a sister Dorothy Korody of Denver, CO.

A brother Arnold Korody, and sisters Eleanor Koerner, Victoria Zinn and Margaret Baxter preceded him in death.

1/21/03 Mike Watkins Grandmother,
Ivah Mae Hedrick, age 91, formerly of Edison, passed away Friday January 17, 2003 at the Morrow Manor Nursing Center in Chesterville.

She was born December 30, 1911, in Morrow County the daughter of the late Clyde and Maude (Wilson) Harden, and had been a lifetime resident of Edison. Ivah is survived by a son Donald L. Hedrick, of Mt. Gilead, 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Everett L. Hedrick, a son Douglas Hedrick, 2 daughters; Orpha Watkins and Marilyn Seitz, 7 brothers and 4 sisters.

Friends may call Sunday, January 19, 2003, from 1 to 4 pm at the Craven Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, where Reverend Dennis Braun will hold funeral services Monday at11 am. 12/28/02 Dana Brubaker Dutton's Father
Earl D. Brubaker, 81, of Bank Street, Mt. Gilead, Ohio, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002 in Wyandot Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Ankneytown, Ohio on May 24, 1921, the son of the late Charles and Bessie Dailey Brubaker. He served in the U.S. Army Airborne during WWII after graduating from Fredericktown High School in 1939. He worked for ITT-North Electric in Galion for 32 years until retiring in 1986.

Earl was a member of the Pulaskiville Community Bible Church, the Morrow County Historical Society, the Couples Garden Club, and a former member of First Baptist Church. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Jerry & Vicki Brubaker of Mt. Gilead, OH; two daughters and sons-in-law Dana & Jim Dutton and Debra & Mike Clark all of Marion, OH; five grandchildren Tera, Brigette, Cory, Heidi & Aaron; two great granddaughters Taylor & Leslie; two brothers Everett Brubaker of Chesterville, OH and Harold Brubaker of Fredericktown, OH; and a sister Velma Corba of Fredericktown, OH.

His wife Bernadine A. Burns Brubaker, whom he married Aug. 26, 1950, preceded him in death on Sept. 14, 1993. A brother Leslie and sister Vera Dusenburg also preceded him in death.

6/14/02 James Scott Gooding, 58, of Fairway Lane, Mt. Gilead, Ohio died unexpectedly Wed., June 12, 2002 in Riverside Methodist Hospital.

He was born in Westerville, Ohio on Jan. 16, 1944, the son of the late Charles William and Mary Clymer Gooding. He graduated from Olentangy High School in 1962, receiving his BS in Education from Otterbein College, and his Masters in Education Administration from Xavier University.

Jim was a lifelong educator having begun his career as a teacher for Mt. Gilead and ending his career as Superintendent of the Mt. Gilead Exempted Village Schools. Between this time span he served as a teacher, as Dean of Students and Unit Principal at Worthington High School, High School Principal for Granville Exempted Schools, Dublin City, and Superintendent at Patrick Henry School.

His memberships include Lewis Center United Methodist Church, the Mt. Gilead Kiwanis Club, Delaware Hiram Masonic Lodge, Olentangy Men’s Chorus, Ohio Archaeological Society, OASSA, BASA, OSBA, ASCD, Phi Delta Kappa, Zeta Phi, and the Otterbein O Club.

Jim had a love for baseball and coached at Mt. Gilead, The Ohio State University, Otterbein College, and Worthington American Legion. His teams won central district, state, regional, and national championships. He was a charter member of the Central Ohio Amateur Baseball Federation and was named COABF man of the year in 1973.

He is survived by his wife Vicki L. Ashbrook, whom he married Apr. 12, 1969; a son J. Scott (Bridget) Gooding II of Cincinnati, OH; a daughter Amy Gooding of Westerville, OH; a brother Robert B. Gooding of Indianapolis, IN; his parents-in-law Lowell and Maxine Ashbrook of Mt. Gilead, OH; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends.

Doris M. Murphy, 88, of St. Rt. 95, Edison, Ohio died Wednesday, May 08, 2002 in the Morrow County Hospital ECF.

She was born in Marion County, Ohio on September 20, 1913, the daughter of the late Earl E. and Alice M. Thomas Schertzer. She graduated from Meeker High School in 1932. She resided in Upper Sandusky prior to moving here in 1955. She was a homemaker who helped run a family farm. A member of the Denmark United Methodist Church Doris also enjoyed sewing and quilting.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Dwight & Becky Murphy of Edison, OH; a daughter and son-in-law Carol & Marvin Levings of Mt. Gilead, OH; 8 grandchildren Kevin, Kandee & Karla Evans, Kathleen Mullennix, Jenifer & Michael Murphy, Daniel & David Levings; 5 great grandchildren Kimberly & Jessica Mullennix, Amanda, Andrew & Aaron Evans; and a brother William Schertzer of Marion, OH.

Her husband Donald "Pat" D. Murphy, whom she married Nov. 4, 1939, preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 1982. Brothers Newton, Edward & Charles Schertzer, sisters Dorothy Porter & Eileen Young, and a great granddaughter Kayla Levings all preceded her in death.

Ruthann Gattshall, 69, of Dogwood Lane, Mt. Gilead, Ohio died Wednesday, March 20, 2002 in the Delaware Court Health Care Center.

She was born in Marion, Ohio on September 12, 1932, the daughter of the late Donald and Ruth E. Spitzer McGraw. She was a 1950 graduate of Cardington High School and has resided in Mt. Gilead since 1957. Ruthann was dedicated to her family, friends and the First Baptist Church. She had worked for Ohio Edison in Mansfield, Mt. Gilead and Cardington and in the floral department at Kroger's in Mt. Gilead.

She is survived by her husband Earl F. Gattshall, whom she married Dec. 14, 1952; two sons and a daughter-in-law Kevin & Monica Gattshall of Southlake, TX and David Gattshall of Hilliard, OH; a daughter Kris Gattshall of Gahanna, OH; three grandchildren Mandy, Danielle & Casey; two great grandchildren Chandler & Andrew; two brothers Donald (Alice) McGraw of Marion, OH and Jack (Diane) McGraw of Delaware, OH; and two sisters Bonnie (Jerry) Ashbrook of Lewis Center, OH and Judy Thompson of Port St. Lucie, FL.

03/17/02 Kevin Guy's father,
George A. Guy, age 80, of St. Rt. 95, Mt. Gilead, Ohio died Sunday, March 10, 2002 at the Altera Sterling House, Barks Rd., Marion.

He was born in Danville, Illinois on Nov. 21, 1921, the son of the late Francis G. and Bessie Rennard Guy. George was a U.S. Marines veteran of WWII, serving in the Pacific (5th Amphibious Corps) and participated in the seizure of Guam and Iwo Jima. He moved here in 1966 from Bellaire Bluffs, FL. He was a co-owner of Guy's Insurance Agency, Inc. in Mt. Gilead from May of 1968 until he retired. He also co-owned H & R Block from 1969-79, bringing the tax preparation business to Morrow County. He held his real estate license with Kelco Realty for many years and was also a bail bondsman for over 30 years. He belonged to many organizations throughout his lifetime.

George loved his family, people and his work. He is survived by his wife LaDonna M. Guy; three sons and daughters-in-law Larry A. & Gladys A. Guy of Tallahassee, FL, David A. & Sara E. Guy of Mt. Gilead, OH, and Kevin W. Guy of Galion, OH; a daughter and son- in-law Donna Sue (Bill) Cackler of Delaware, OH; 10 grandchildren Kim (Scott) Mehr, Stacie (Mark) Forbes & Shannon Guy all of Tallahassee Fl., Bryan Guy of Mt. Gilead, Lisa (Doug) Beck of Mt. 1/21/02 An esteemed collection of Class of '72ers gathered at Cindy Carr's house on 1/17/02 to work on reunion plans. According to Trent's report...

"We actually got something accomplished this time. Sat. Aug. 3rd will be held at the Marion Carousel Convention Center just south of Southland Mall on SR 423. They have two rooms, a Ballroom which seats 500 and has a restored 1916 Herschel Spillman Carousel in it. We will be in the Conference room which holds 125 people.

It looks like the menu will be:
Garden Style Tossed Salad
Oven Roasted Chicken Breast
Top Round of Beef Au Jus
Baked Potato
California Mixed Vegtables
Chocolate Volcano for dessert (if I get my way)
Deep chocolate truffle cake with a liquid chocolate
center served warm.
For non-meat eaters we will have Vegtable Lasagna."

12/22/01 Dave Coldwell's father,
Loren C. Coldwell, 81, of North Main Street, Mt. Gilead, Ohio died Thursday, December 20, 2001, at the Extended Care Facility of Morrow County Hospital.

He was a lifelong Morrow County resident, where he was born on Oct. 20, 1920, the son of the late Alfred B. and Hazel Lewis Coldwell. Loren was a devoted and loving husband to his wife of 55 years, the former Louise Jackson, whom he married on June 28, 1946, and was dedicated above all to his family, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during WWII. Loren retired in 1984 after 34 years of service with Galion-Dresser Manufacturing. He enjoyed working on the family farm where he and his wife resided for 46 years before moving to Mt. Gilead. He was a 50-year member of the Bryn Zion Baptist Church. During this time he actively supported church softball and dartball teams, building projects, and served many years as a trustee. He was a member of the Williamsport Grange for 65 years and a member of the 411th Gun Battalion Association.

Loren is survived by his wife Louise; three sons and daughters-in-law Dan & Doris Coldwell of Mt. Gilead, OH, Larry & Jan Coldwell of Killbuck, OH, and Dave & Lisa Coldwell of Summitville, OH; two daughters and sons-in-law Bonnie & Steve Wiseman and Suzi & Ric Lyle all of Mt. Gilead, OH; 14 grandchildren Rachel & Luke Coldwell, Matt, Todd & Kara Wiseman, Zach, Seth & Tiffany Coldwell, Josh, Jed & Jared Coldwell, Tyler & Mitchell Madeker and McKenzie Lyle; four great grandchildren Shelbie, Lindsey, Jordan & Bailey Wiseman; and a brother James J.R. Coldwell of Lexington, OH.

11/28/01 Martha E. Hubbert, 91, of North Delaware Street, Mt. Gilead, Ohio died Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at her home.

She was born near Johnsville, Ohio on September 19, 1910, the daughter of the late Mark & Iva Durbin Thuma. She graduated from Fredericktown High School and Otterbein College in Westerville, and received her Masters of Arts in Mathematics from Columbia University. She taught high school math, Latin and English at Johnsville High School and math at Mt. Gilead High School until retiring in 1974. Martha was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women, the Morrow County Retired Teachers Association, Senior Progress Club, the Bluebell Twig at Morrow County Hospital, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Green Pairs Garden Club.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law David & Nancy Hubbert of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; grandchildren Christopher Hubbert & Abigail Behrens of Shaker Heights, Ohio, Laura & David DiCarlo of Oxford, Mississippi; two great grandchildren John & Samuel; nieces and nephews.

Her husband Joseph S. Hubbert, whom she married July 11, 1942, preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 1980. Three sisters Mary Thuma, Betty Tenney, and Phyllis Boone also preceded her in death.

10/26/01 Mark your calendars now .... the 30th reunion of the Mt. Gilead High School Class of 1972 will be August 2nd and 3rd 2002.

Preliminary plans are for a get together Friday evening, golf scramble Saturday morning, with the main event Saturday evening. Keith Rogers, official voice of the MGHS Football team will be MC for the evening.

Once we will know more, we will let you know more. I have found a lot more email addresses since the last message. Make sure you copy the ones of the people you would like to get in contact with.
